New documentary presents Martin Margiela: In his own words

Martin Margiela: In His Own Words image 1Since Martin Margiela quit fashion in 2008, he has been as elusive as Marlene Dietrich when she quit films. But what did we expect of the man who refused to show his face or grant interviews throughout the 90s and 00s when his runways were igniting a fire under international fashion? Consistently mysterious, he is perhaps the most revered and influential designer of the last 50 years, the current crop of designers can’t quit referencing his concepts, and all the Margiela pieces in my closet still look so relevant, so directional.

After many failed past attempts, a filmmaker has finally convinced Margiela to let us into his personal world. The result is the documentary, “Martin Margiela: In his own words,” which premiered in NYC this month and will be in wider distribution soon.
