On my recent Sex & The City binge––all 6 series plus the first film, never the second––I was reintroduced to this dress which I created when I was a designer working for a big Italian fashion house. I used to do that sort of thing for my sins, you know. The dress was widely denounced by the powers-that-be within as something that no woman would want to wear, and only 8 of the style were made. Yet, somehow, one of them made its magical way into the fairy-godmother hands of NYC-based super stylist Patricia Field who then placed it onto Sarah Jessica Parker’s heavenly form for Carrie’s date with the diabolically bad Jack Berger. You can imagine with what delight I waved this in the face of the naysayers.
In the episode, Berger derided the little veiled accessory Carrie had rakishly popped on her head to accompany my dress (a flapper-inspired jersey cocktail number), then struggled to deal with her rising success as writer while his book deal fell through, and couldn’t handle a woman who could afford to buy him Prada on a whim, so he dumped her on a post-it with the words: “I’m sorry. Don’t hate me. I can’t.” With the poetic vision of hindsight I kinda wish I’d used those very words when I resigned from my position in the big design house. The takeaway: Trust your creative vision and spirit animal creatives are out there to catch it through osmosis, never date a writer, and make Prada purchases only for yourself.
I have many such stories from the designer trenches, I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe I should write a book. Oh wait, I did. It’s called “Silk for the Feed Dogs” and it’s available on Amazon and here is the link if you would like to know more…
brava Jackie!
Grazie, Cara Mia! ❤️
Silk for the Feed Dogs is a great book. I heartly recommend it.
Thank you, Ellen! I’d really appreciate if you wanted to write those very sentiments in an Amazon review as it always helps sales:-) Happy weekend!
Morning Jackie! How are you?
I was in Europe when Sex In The City came out, so I’ve never seen it (other than bits and pieces). I figure that I will watch it, Gilmore Girls, Game of Thrones, etc. when I am older. ;).
Take good care.
Hi Dievca!
Hope you’re staying warm! But you’re a hearty midwesterner and you’ve breezed through worse than this.
I was in Europe too, but SATC didn’t escape me. With a lot of gay friends (in fashion), it became must-see TV, viewing parties and the works. I too have contemplated GoT but it’s too intimidating!
I hope you’re well. I’m not so frequently on WordPress now because I found I couldn’t keep up with everything. Miss you!
PS. The dress is perfect!
😘
🙂 Always trust your own inspirations and gutt feelings, dear Jackie!
Congratulations to you!
Have a very HAPPY weekend 🙂
