  1. many of these are the same as in New England, though cute is closer to “clever” (“I was just trying to be cute” or “you think you’re so cute doing that!”) and “smart” can be irreverent, particularly as in “smart ass”. The first time I read British erotica I was taken by surprise because “saucy” is “irreverent” here too. Of course, “awful” is more often used like “you’re awfully nice” or “that’s an awfully big mountain to climb”. I’ll just stop before I get to anything dealing with procreation…
