Fashion’s Unsung Designers: Bowie’s Freddie Burretti

I have begun a series for Fashion United entitled Fashion’s Unsung Designers. It was inspired by my mourning of Bowie: from the gloom of his death rose creativity––the very spirit behind his parting album, Blackstar, I’m sure you’ll agree.

It’s impossible not to be intrigued by the mysterious life of young Freddie Burretti, Bowie’s first designer, who was so important and yet is so forgotten. (That’s him pictured above receiving five music awards from Melody Maker in 1973 on Bowie’s behalf, and beside him Bowie wearing one of Burretti’s tailored suits.)

There will be many more interesting stars of the fashion galaxy that once burned brightly but now have fallen out of all conversation, and I hope to unearth them. In the meantime, learn about the enigmatic Burretti and  and his relationship with the singer hereab307657241cbf2ebea8488add54a678

  1. Over the weekend I watch the double DVD set of Best of Bowie videos. I very rarely think of fashion, but there is no way you can look at the man who had a huge hit song “Fashion” and not think the word. I wondered if he had created his styles, particularly the jumpsuits, and stuff from the Ziggy era and, of course the Life on Mars? video. I guess now I know!

  2. Fascinating peek into Bowie’s behind-the-scenes style story….I will watch out for the documentary about Freddie. Cheers!

  3. Wow! I had no idea!! This is a great idea for a feature and I really love learning about these unsung heroes :)!!!

  4. I have a feeling that I am going to love this series, Jackie. Freddie seems to have created the best for Bowie (in my opinion…).

  5. What a good idea Jackie, I’m joining Dievca on both accounts. Will try to find the documentary too; I still can’t really watch/listen to anything with/by Bowie but will keep it in my growing playlist, for when the time is right 🙂
