I have begun a series for Fashion United entitled Fashion’s Unsung Designers. It was inspired by my mourning of Bowie: from the gloom of his death rose creativity––the very spirit behind his parting album, Blackstar, I’m sure you’ll agree.
It’s impossible not to be intrigued by the mysterious life of young Freddie Burretti, Bowie’s first designer, who was so important and yet is so forgotten. (That’s him pictured above receiving five music awards from Melody Maker in 1973 on Bowie’s behalf, and beside him Bowie wearing one of Burretti’s tailored suits.)
There will be many more interesting stars of the fashion galaxy that once burned brightly but now have fallen out of all conversation, and I hope to unearth them. In the meantime, learn about the enigmatic Burretti and and his relationship with the singer here
